The project team was headed by a previous chairman and now an assistant chairperson for service of OMSurg, Dr. Reynaldo Joson. He was responsible for the development of the OMSurg Disaster Preparedness Program starting 2003. He has been a periodic module writer and facilitator for World Health Organization Western Pacific Regional Office’s emergency and disaster management courses since 2007. His last participation was in 2011 when he was a facilitator of WHO-WPRO Training in Hospital and Health Facility Emergency Exercises in Hanoi, Vietnam.
The other team members consisted of Dr. Harvey Balucating, a graduate of the OMSurg, who was designated as the OMSurg Disaster Control Coordinator for 2012; Dr. John Lloyd Fonte, the 2012 Chief Resident of OMSurg and also OMSurg Disaster Control Officer; and Dr. Jenny de Castro, a second-year surgical resident who acted as the secretary and communication officer of the team.
Since 2003, annually, there has been at least one table-top exercise to orient and keep all the surgical residents abreast of the OMSurg disaster preparedness program with focus on management of surge of patients emergencies. Concurrent with the annual table-top exercises was a continual review and refinement of the OMSurg disaster preparedness plan.
